Edison Brewing Co. Pergola

This installation site is situated on a bluff just east of the City of Columbus Ohio known as Franklin Peak.  It’s the highest elevation in Franklin County. Due to their location and exposure to the prevailing weather sweeping across the Scioto River valley, Mother Nature decided how much Edison Brewing could utilize their patio.  In essence, it limited their revenue and they had no control over it. Jeff Manger worked with a General Contractor named Ferguson Construction (Sidney OH) on this project.  The client was Wil Schulze, the Owner.

Edison Brewing project

There was an existing steel sub-structure on this site.  The plan was to install fixed 2×8 treated lumber louvers inside the 8 squares created by the steel substructure.  Obviously, fixed blade louvers on a 45-degree slant can not possibly stop rain or snow.  And they only have an effect on the sun for a portion of the day.  The motorized louvered pergola option became a better option with obvious benefits.

This pergola was 20 feet wide and 40 feet long. It was composed of eight 10 x 10 squares.  Each square is what we call a “bay”.  Each bay is operated by 1 piston-activated linear motor.  One detachable wall-mounted remote control allows the client to operate all bays independently or simultaneously.  This allows for the ultimate flexibility to weather-proof this patio when confronted with excessive sun, rain or snow.

The installation commenced on Thursday, May 12th 2022.  Installation was completed a week later (5/19/22) and Edison was open for business!  They had a huge local brew fest event at their location the following weekend so the installation had to be expedited.
